At the HandsOn Tampa Bay (HOT) volunteer appreciation dinner last month, some extraordinary people were recognized. The exceptional people who gave more than 100 hours to help others, and those who led more than 12 projects, were called out and thanked. HOT also revealed their three big award winners at the dinner, held at the Rusty Pelican in Tampa.

The Eighth Annual Art of Giving held on April 12 at the A La Carte Pavilion was packed with memorable moments, from walking the red carpet and bidding on international trips to meeting award-winning actress America Ferrera. But the most memorable moment was not shaking hands with the Hollywood star but rather hearing a young man tell his story and watching the silence fall over the room as the audience of nearly 650 sat quietly and listened. Brett Nelson was desperate. He and his wife wanted to move back to Tampa so their 10-year old daughter would have access to better resources for her autism. But he had no money to make the move.
Brett is the meat manager at Publix store #XXXXX in Treasure Island. A former commissioner of Belleair Bluffs, he fell on hard times when the economy did. He moved his wife and three daughters to Georgia for job opportunities that didn’t pan out. He went five months with no income, then got a job delivering pizza. Brett made between $30 and $40 a night. It wasn’t enough. He was fortunate enough to get a job with Publix and in 2010, he and his wife decided it was time to come home, to get more help for his daughter. Read More...
